Earthquake weather is a type of weather popularly believed to precede earthquakes. From the ancient histories of Herodotus to the modern writings of David Lance Goines, the notion that weather can somehow foreshadow coming seismic activity has been the topic of much discussion and debate.

The USGS website states that, In the 4th century B.C., Aristotle proposed that earthquakes were caused by winds trapped in subterranean caves. Small tremors were thought to have been caused by air pushing on the cavern roofs, and large ones by the air breaking the surface. This theory led to a belief in earthquake weather, that because a large amount of air was trapped underground, the weather would be hot and calm before an earthquake. A later theory stated that earthquakes occurred in calm, cloudy conditions, and were usually preceded by strong winds, fireballs, and meteors. A modern theory proposes that certain cloud formations may be used to predict earthquakes, however, this idea is rejected by most geologists

Geologists maintain that there is no connection between weather and earthquakes. They are the result of geologic processes within the earth and can happen in any weather and at any time during the year. Earthquakes originate miles underground. Wind, precipitation, temperature, and barometric pressure changes affect only the surface and shallow subsurface of the Earth. Earthquakes are focused at depths well out of the reach of weather, and the forces that cause earthquakes are much larger than the weather forces. Earthquakes occur in all types of weather, in all climate zones, in all seasons of the year, and at any time of day.

Did you feel the earthquake last night?
Q. I am in London I only found out this morning it was an earthquake. My friend called me at 1am screaming and crying thinking an evil poltergeist was shaking her bed. So i had to go to her house to see her streaming with tears and a cross in her hand. She didn't sleep in the room that night but left the light on so the 'evil poltergiest' can leave. So funny :D

What is the source of the US power supply?
Q. I live in Japan and recently an earthquake caused a big problem at a nuclear power plant, a major source of Japanese power. I've also been to China recently to see the 3 Gorges Dam project, which supplies most of the power to the surrounding area. It made me wonder where we get most of our power in the states. I was quick to condemn the nuclear power plant BUT not having any idea where the power comes from when I flip on a light, or use my computer, or play games, I thought I should research the issue before I stood on my soap box! And I'm having trouble finding anything comprehensive about the states and power on the internet. Does anyone know, or could you direct me to someplace where I could find out more about this? Thanks!

A. I suggest you google "USA Electric Energy - sources" - it will scare the Hell out of you, but it will give you something to think about - America is the world's greatest user of electricity - but don't worry - China and India will soon catch up and you can feel less guilty !!!

New Fuel Pump Regulator, Why is it Shaking?
Q. I currently drive a 98 Chevy Malibu with 150K+ miles. It is definitely getting near retirement, but I need it for at least another year. Several weeks ago it started stalling out at lights, shaking a bit before stalling out. I took it into the shop and they said I need to replace my fuel pump regulator and fuel filter. I paid a few hundred bucks drove it home, and now when I am idle the car shakes like there's an earthquake. I called the shop back and they said the transmission and radiator needed to be flushed, but the shaking never happened to this degree before and I'm wondering why it suddenly started after getting it fixed. Do think that flushing the coolant and transmission fluid will make it better or is something bigger going on?… [cont.]

A. There is a good chance that the shop either left a vacuum line or other connection loose or disconnected, or accidentally disturbed something. Coolant flush, and transmission service have nothing to do with the rough idle. Take the car back to the shop and insist that they follow up on their repair, and don't settle for a raping. Good Luck
