The legend of the Flying Dutchman concerns a ghost ship that can never make port, doomed to sail the oceans forever.

The legend probably originates in 17th century nautical folklore. The oldest extant version dates to the late 18th century.

Reported sightings of the 19th and 20th centuries have the ship glowing with ghostly light. It is said that if hailed by another ship, its crew will try to send messages to land or to people long dead. In ocean lore, the sight of this phantom ship is a portent of doom.

A. The earliest known reference to Davy Jones occurs in The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle by Tobias Smollett, published in 1751: This same Davy Jones, according to the mythology of sailors, is the fiend that presides over all the evil spirits of the deep, and is often seen in various shapes, perching among the rigging on the eve of hurricanes, ship-wrecks, and other disasters to which sea-faring life is exposed, warning the devoted wretch of death and woe. [1] He is described as having saucer eyes, three rows of teeth, horns, a tail, and blue smoke coming from his nostrils. The term appears to have been common among sailors, as the name Davy Jones appears often in popular nautical literature. As is common with slang, the exact origin of " [cont.]

Who wrote the story about Davy Jones and the Flying Dutchman?
Q. What is the name of the book?

A. I don't believe there is a book. I think that the whole concept of having Davey Jones as the captain of the Flying Dutchman was developed for the Pirates of the Caribbean 2. Davy Jones' Locker was a traditional name for the bottom of the sea, and the Flying Dutchman was a legendary cursed ship, which was according to some accounts captained by a dutch captain, not Davey Jones.

Les Contes d'Hoffman or The Flying Dutchman?
Q. These are two of the opera's that are going to be done by the State Opera here in SA, this year. My parents say they will only pay for me to see one. And I love both! Also my mother will be coming and she doesnt like opera at all and I really dont know if she could handle Wagner. (Maybe I will just go with my dad instead, he likes opera!) So which should I see?

A. Well, as most patrons of this forum are aware, I'm an avid Wagnerian; and would simply as a general rule, recommend the Dutchman. But you seem to have a unique situation, and one requiring more than an off the top of my head response. Granted, there are more music lovers who can't handle Wagner, than there are those who can: well known fact, I guess. And for some reason, the Dutchman is one of Wagner's more often performed operas - seems to me. The reasons for this, I'm not sure. But Hoffman if I'm not mistaken, is performed much more infrequently; so, the point being, I would opt for it; because you will most probably have more opportunities in the future to attend a performance of the Dutchman than it. And besides,… [cont.]
