London Heathrow Airport or Heathrow (IATA: LHR, ICAO: EGLL), located in the London Borough of Hillingdon, is the largest and busiest airport in the United Kingdom. It is also the busiest in the European Union in terms of passenger traffic and the second busiest in terms of traffic movements . It is the world's third busiest airport for passenger traffic and it handles the most international passenger traffic in the world. Heathrow is owned and operated by BAA, which also owns and operates six other UK airports. BAA is itself owned by an international consortium led by the Spanish Ferrovial Group. Heathrow is the primary hub of British Airways, BMI and Virgin Atlantic. Located 12 NM (22 km; 14 mi) west of Central London, England, Heathrow originally was designed to have six runways in three pairs spaced approximately 120 degrees apart but now has just two parallel main runways running east-west and five terminals. The site covers 12.14 square kilometres (4.69 sq mi). Terminal 5 was officially opened by H.M. Queen Elizabeth II on 14 March 2008 and opened to passengers on 27 March 2008. Construction of Heathrow East, to replace Terminal 2 and The Queen's Building, began in 2009, and is expected to be completed by early 2014. Terminals 3 and 4 will also be refurbished during this period. In November 2007 a consultation process began for the building of a new third runway and was controversially approved on 15th January 2009 by UK Government ministers. Heathrow Airport has a CAA Public Use Aerodrome Licence (Number P527) that allows flights for the public transport of passengers or for flying instruction. From Wikipedia under the

Q. Taking my son to Catch a flight to the USA next week from Heathrow airport (10.05am flight) next Thursday from the Birmingham area. Need to get there a few hours before flight, how much travelling time would you sensibly allow and also finding parking spaces Never been to Heathrow before, what will be the worst road congestion areas. If you travel to Heathrow from B'ham on a regular basis any goods times to give me please. Spelling error, meant any good "tips" to give me Asked by Russell B - Thu Sep 4 02:11:04 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. I am a UK Travel Agent working for Co-op Travel First, I hope you are not going to just "find a parking space" - you must pre-book if you don't want to get fleeced. You don't say how long you are going for, but if it is 14 days then the best parking price is 73. You should aim to arrive at the airport around 07:00. If you are using one of the budget parks, then you must allow for being shuttled to your terminal. Frankly, I would leave B'ham at 4 am. However, it you want a more relaxing start to your holiday, I would strongly suggest coming down the night before - you never know when an accident might block the motorway then you are in trouble. I can arrange a luxury 4 star Heathrow hotel, and 14 nights parking, for 119. Give… [cont.] Answered by Mike the mole - Thu Sep 4 02:51:08 2008 Travel from Heathrow airport to Greenwich? Q. I'm going to a concert in the O2 London next year. My preference would have been to fly into London City airport as it's nearer but also a lot more expensive than flying into Heathrow. Does anyone know the best way of public transport to get from Heathrow airport to Greenwich bearing in mind we'll be carrying suitcases? Tricky one? Oh god, maybe I should just try get the extra money and fly into London City Eh, I wasn't planning on bringing a suitcase to the O2, my hotel is in Greenwich. Asked by Stephanie - Sat May 23 16:36:32 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Not tricky at all. Don't bother with the Heathrow Express; its 18.50 return, which is bloody expensive. All it does is get you to central London in 15 minutes. Speedy, but pointless unless your in a big rush. No.. better idea. Take the London Underground. It'll be 4 from Heathrow to "North Greenwich" which is much more reasonable. North Greenwich is the nearest tube station to the O2. Take the Piccadilly line to Green Park, and then take the Jubilee line from Green Park to Greenwich. And don't worry about luggage, the Tube trains have ample space for suitcases. Its the self-confidence of having to travel across London. Don't worry, take a deep breath, and with this bit of information you'll save yourself large amounts of money. Q. My husband and I are flying from John F. Kennedy Aiport to Heathrow Airport, and then up to Edinburgh airport. We'd like to take a bottle of wine for my parents, but is alcohol permitted in check-in luggage? Thank you. Just to clarify: I'm putting it in the hold, that's why I said "suitcase" and "check-in luggage".
