Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is a multiprogram science and technology national laboratory managed for the United States Department of Energy by UT-Battelle. ORNL is the DOE's largest science and energy laboratory. ORNL is located in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, near Knoxville. Scientists and engineers at ORNL conduct basic and applied research and development to create scientific knowledge and technological solutions that build the nation's expertise in key areas of science; increase the availability of clean, abundant energy; restore and protect the environment; and contribute to national security.

ORNL also performs other work for the Department of Energy, including isotope production, information management, and technical program management, and provides research and technical assistance to other organizations.

What is an attractive and interesting title for a documentary about Julius Robert Oppenheimer?
Q. This is a short 10 minute documentary. The title should relate to the atomic bomb, Manhattan project, World War 2, and Oak Ridge National Laboratory. It just needs to be something catchy that makes people want to watch this video.

A. The Atomic Master Blaster Atomic (old Deborah Harry & Blondie song) It's the End of the World As We Know & I Feel Fine (R.E.M. song) Now I Am Become Death (a quote from Oppenheimer in 1965 quoting the Bhagavad-Gita) The Destroyer of Worlds (from the same qoute of Oppenheimer from above) American Prometheus (the name of a book about Oppenheimer by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, 2005)

Half-life chem help?
Q. i ned help with this problem: C.E Bemis and colleagues at oak ridge national laboratory confirmed the synthesis of element 104, the half-life was only 4.5 s. Only 3000 atoms of the element were created in the tests. How many atoms were left after 4.5 s?

A. You need to study. You should learn the definition of half-life. The answer is self-evident: 1500. This assumes that the test created all the 104 in the same instant and that the 4.5 s is the time from that instant.

Are you concerned that human CO2 emissions continue to accelerate?
Q. The Global Carbon Project released its Carbon Budget 2007 today. The report shows a continuation of the grossly unsustainable growth rate in CO2 emissions since 2000, which is nearly four times the growth rate of the 1990s: Scientists were surprised and dismayed because the increase exceeds the most dire outlook for emissions from burning coal and oil and related activities projected by the IPCC and because the increase occurred despite rising fossil fuel prices. Gregg Marland, a senior staff scientist at the U.S. Department of Energy s Oak Ridge National Laboratory, said he was surprised at the results because he thought world emissions would drop because of the economic downturn. That didn t happen. Meanwhile, forests and… [cont.]

A. It is not good news. Even when lots of countries try, they can't seem to reduce their CO2 output. The US is coming to the table so late, it could be a long time before we are able to change our energy use habits. This really shows the need for immediate action! Hopefully, China, India, and other developing countries will see the urgency and act as well.
