The Flat Earth model is a view that the Earth's shape is a flat plane or disk. Most pre-modern cultures have had conceptions of a flat Earth, including ancient Greece until the classical period, the Bronze Age and Iron Age civilizations of the Ancient Near East until the Hellenistic period, Ancient India until the Gupta period (early centuries AD) and China until the 17th century. It was also typically held in the cultures of the New World until the time of European contact, and a flat earth domed by the firmament in the shape of an inverted bowl is common in pre-scientific societies. The paradigm of a spherical earth was developed in ancient Greek astronomy, beginning with Pythagoras (6th century BC), although most Pre-Socratics retained the flat earth model. Aristotle accepted the spherical shape of the earth on empirical grounds around 330 BC, and knowledge of the spherical earth gradually began to spread beyond the Hellenistic world from then on. That medieval Christianity believed in a flat earth has been referred to as "The Myth of the Flat Earth". In 1945, it was listed by the Historical Association (of Britain) as the second of 20 in a pamphlet on common errors in history. From Wikipedia under the

When did humans start thinking the earth was flat? Q. In ancient sculptures and drawings, the Earth was depicted as being round. Atlas was shown as holding the Earth in the form of a globe. At what point did "flat earth" become the dominent theory? Asked by John J - Tue Oct 31 00:53:54 2006 - - 12 Answers - 0 Comments A. Who knows what this or that uneducated person thought, but if you're referring to the educated --leaders and elites-- the answer is simple: they DIDN'T! Hetzer could not be more wrong. His caricature of the "Dark Ages" (a term most historians long ago set aside as inaccurate) is about as ignorant as he seems to think the people of those centuries were. On the contrary, there was much intellectual vitality, and advancement in many fields -- technological (many key inventions, e.g., in agriculture and navigation, including those that made the "Age o Discovery" possible), scholarly (those 'ignorant' religious folks FOUNDED the university system), economic (beginnings of modern economic systems, stock companies, banking), social and… [cont.] Answered by bruhaha - Tue Oct 31 22:56:32 2006 Why do Christians believe the earth is flat? Q. As a Christian have you known anyone who believed the earth to be flat? I have not. The Bible speaks of the four corners of the earth, but is indicating the four points of the compass: North. South.East. West. I heard of a Flat Earth Society, but I don't know if it really existed. I am sure if it did, they were not all Christians. Why do we get accused of this belief? Asked by oooooooo - Mon Nov 30 22:14:20 2009 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments A. I don't know how you can make a generalization like that. (Saying "Why do Christians believe the earth is flat?") There IS a Flat Earth Society, and I suppose they are free to believe the earth is flat if they want to, despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary. Answered by Fender - Mon Nov 30 22:21:38 2009 Why does the Flat Earth Society still believe in a flat Earth?
Q. Samuel Rowbotham supported the notion of a flat Earth. After Rowbotham's death in 1884, his followers established the Universal Zetetic Society. In 1956, Samuel Shenton took over the Universal Zetetic Society, which would later become the Flat Earth Society. The Flat Earth Society took the position that the Apollo Moon landings were a hoax, because the photos of Earth taken from Apollo 8 was spherical and not flat. The Flat Earth Society still exists today under president Daniel Shenton... Asked by greg_novella - Thu Apr 1 10:29:59 2010 - - 14 Answers - 0 Comments A. Wow. I thought this was a joke. I know that in Ancient China they believed that Earth was flat and square, but that was before people could get very far off of the ground. Here's a link to Wikipedia's article about the Flat Earth Society. Answered by beadingbusily - Thu Apr 1 10:58:06 2010 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Flat Earth" See also:
