How can you clean an old tapestry?
Q. I have a needlepoint tapestry created by my mother years ago. It recently survived hurrican Ivan, but was drenched in rainwater and left unprotected for several weeks. It is dirty, probably mouldy, and some of the colours have seeped into adjacent areas. The backing fabric may have deteriorated as well. The local cleaners refuse to touch it. Any suggestions? Mike D.

A. My wife takes her needle points to the cleaners when she is done working on them, before putting them behind glass. Ask them if you signed a waiver (releasing them from everything) , will they do it. Unless it s real bad that it will fall apart.

Are all Tapestry Wall-hangings sold on the Internet similar quality?
Q. I have found 4 different sites for a Tapestry that I would like to buy.The prices range from $79 to $183. They look identical, but because the prices are so different am I getting a poor quality for the cheaper price? Is 100% cotton better than Cotton/ Polyester mix?

A. Be careful. I got caught up in that once. IT was okay - where they s*cked was in the shipping and handling charges. Make sure you get one from a reliable spot that you can return it to should it not suit once you have it on your wall and REALLY take care with the additional charges. Good luck!

A. I once hung a tapestry over my fireplace instead of a picture. I got more complements about it. I say go with the tapestry. It's really hard to find the right picture anyway.

A. I always buy some nice fringe for mine. Or you can turn the edges under and sew it like a hem, or you can make binding (or buy bias binding) to put all around the edge. .

How do you "tapestry weave" the picture that you just drew, onto a loom?
Q. I've been trying to find a pattern or picture do "tapestry" weave onto a loom. If I find that pattern, great, but I don't know how to put it on there. But I do already know how to tapestry weave. Will I need any graph paper?
Asked by Kevin A - Fri Oct 24 17:05:46 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. All you will need is an actual size "cartoon" of your pattern or picture Be sure to draw your picture the size you want your tapestry to be, ie: 36 inch wide weaving, your picture needs to be 36 inches wide. graph paper depends on how good an artist you be!! If you can sketch the picture into a cartoon for your weaving, excellent! Then tape your cartoon up behind your tapestry loom and get busy.

How do you clean/restore a tapestry?
Q. My husband inherited a full wall-sized tapestry after his grandfather passed. It is very nice but pretty dingy. Where would we go or who would we talk to about getting it cleaned? Anybody know about how much that would cost?
Asked by bethusila - Thu Aug 13 09:51:57 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. works very well but it has to be winter where you live: put it out on the fresh snow. the snow absorbs the dirt. no chemicals needed so very good for nature and your health too. and totally free! for the restoring (if you mean it's damaged): contact a museum, there will be someone working there specialised in restoration who can advise you.

A. I'm a big believer in taking things like this to a good dry cleaner. It may be costly, but it is too easy to ruin them. I would ask a yarn shop or antique dealer for reccomendations.

How can I hang a small (1'x2' ) silk tapestry.?
Q. This is a very finely woven tapestry and I am looking for hardware that will work. The Zoroufy company makes hardware that is way to big for this piece. I have looked at "clip rings" but these require a rod and I have found none that work together as a unit.

If one's life is a tapestry, what colour is your 'thread' and what colour is that of your significant other?
Q. I am basing this question on Carole King's wonderful song "Tapestry". I'd also like to know what the other side of the tapestry looks like - where the threads come in, where they end. The criss-crossings and twisted knots. What is the final picture? I'm guessing we move into 4 dimensions - well most of us - some may go further! Your responses are fabulous! I'm at a loss to pick any as being better than another. I guess this is why our individual tapestry links (on whatever level) with each other. I can visualise cascades of brilliant cloth draped over, under, and through the world. BTW if you read Piers Anthony you may have come across his series 'Incarnations of Immortality' that segues into this question too. Thank you all so much. [cont.]

A. Hi Sybil, My tapestry would be draped on the wall of an ancient castle; it would have been started long, long ago and it has recently been discovered unfinished. It is a celebration of my life, my past lives, my dreams, insights and experiences. Threads will be strong and good quality reflecting my strength of character. Texture will sometimes be rough, sometimes smooth but there is nothing coarse. This is not a primitive piece. Colours in the main section will be subtle, the outer border more vibrant. The weave is complicated and there is more to this tapestry than first meets the eye. There will be more shadow than light. Some parts will be more detailed and intricate. In some of the lighted areas, ribbons and beads will be added to… [cont.]

Help! I need the title & author of a YA book about a runaway who learns tapestry weaving?
Q. A runaway girl, named Elizabeth Van Vliet, meets a young woman on the road who takes her into her life in San Francisco. The young woman is a tapestry weaver, and teaches Elizabeth how to weave. Elizabeth makes friends with some neighbors, and toward the end of the novel, the young woman is murdered in the laundromat in which she works at night. I loved this book as a teenager, and am desperate to remember the title & author, and hopefully find it again! Thank you!

What is the best fabric to use to tie-dye a tapestry?
Q. I'd like to tie-dye a few tapestries and I don't know what fabric to use. I've read that people use tablecloths and bedsheets but I'm not sure what materials they need to be (100% cotton, or will synthetic fiber blends work?). Also, sheets and tablecloths have different weights and thread counts, are there any that work particularly well and can be found cheaply at a local store? I will be using Procion dye and pretreating with soda ash

A. We seem to be having some differences in concepts here. To me, a tapestry is a heavy woven fabric, made by hand (or now by machine) without use of a shuttle. Typically scenic or floral, used for decorative hangings or heavy draperies or sometimes upholstery. What are you trying to make? Procion MX will dye cellulosics like cotton, rayon, linen; they will also dye silk, wool and nylon, but with color shifts. See the information here: If you try to dye, say, a cotton-poly blend fabric, you'll get a lighter color than intended, a marled color, warp or weft of white, and the other dyed, or some other mixture. The way the fibers were blended to make the fabric will determine it. If you're not using greige goods (PFD, prepared for… [cont.]

What can I use to hang up a tapestry?
Q. I have a tapestry that I want to hang up in my dorm room but unfortunately, the walls are as hard as rock so I cant use thumbtacks like I usually do. I'm also not allowed to drill any kind of holes in the walls because then I'll be charged for damage to the room later so I was wondering if anyone knows of any kind of super sticky tape or something that I can buy that will hold cloth to a wall but wont superglue it there or cause any damage? Ideas anyone?

What are good ways to hang tapestry or art on fabric: a 3 x 4 foot quilt; a 15x20 inch batik; an antique rug?
Q. These pieces have no hooks, loops, channels, rods, etc. The quilt and batik have simple cotton lining [sewn only around the outside edges]. The fringed rug has no backing at all. It is delicate, 80 to 100 years old. I want to make sure not to damage the items with pulls, misshape them or puncture them. Why was the Bayeux Tapestry important in the study of the Norman conquest of England?
Q. Ive tried studying the question but so far no luck! :(

A. It's considered to be a primary source of evidence as it was produced not long after the conquest itself, reputedly by William the Conqueror's wife Matilda (although this is unlikely to be true). So it is the closest we will get to a set of photographs taken of the preparations for the battle and the battle itself. It's one of the few primary sources to survive. It can tell us so much about armour, and the types of boats they used, the horses they used, and all sorts of things we just don't get from descriptions of the battle. I think you need to do some more research about the Tapestry at these websites - this one is particularly good because it does answer your question much better than I have above Battle of Hastings… [cont.]

How do you clean tapestry chairs?
Q. How do you clean tapestry chairs?
Asked by Teeny - Fri Jun 20 14:50:11 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I assume they are expensive chairs. They sell an upholstery cleaner in the supermarkets, it is a foam, cleaner - spray it on the chairs then rub with a clean sponge. Using lots of old white towels or soft cotton clothes rub off the foam until the seats are clean. When the towels you use to clean off the foam come up clean then that means most of the dirt is out. It takes a lot of elbow grease. You may have to repeat the procedure several times, I do not know how many chairs you have to clean but you will be wise to buy two cans of upholstery cleaner if you have more than 4 chairs. Another thing you can do is rent a steam upholstery machine for this job.
