A steel-string acoustic guitar is a modern form of guitar descended from the classical guitar, but strung with steel strings for a brighter, louder sound. They are often referred to simply as acoustic guitars, although strictly speaking the nylon-strung classical guitar is acoustic as well. The most common type can be called a flat-top guitar to distinguish it from the more specialized archtop guitar and other variations.

The standard tuning for an acoustic guitar is E-A-D-G-B-E (low to high), although many players, particularly fingerpickers, use alternate tunings (scordatura), such as "open G" (D-G-D-G-B-D), "open D tuning" (D-A-D-F♯-A-D), or "drop D" (D-A-D-G-B-E).

Construction

There are many different variations on the construction of, and materials used in, steel-string guitars. The various combinations of the different woods and their quality, along with design and construction elements (for example, how the top is braced), are among the factors affecting the timbre or "tone" of the guitar. Many players and builders feel a well-made guitar's tone improves over time.

What are the best acoustic guitars for beginners?
Q. I'm going to be taking a class in college next semester to learn to play guitar. It requires that we get an acoustic guitar. I know nothing about guitars so it would be great if anyone could suggest certain ones to look into or certain types of wood/strings/whatever that would be best for me. I also don't have a huge budget so cheaper guitars that are still good quality would be prefered. Thanks. :]

A. The Dean Playmate is the best beginners guitar you'll get. It's a cool guitar for only 70 bucks. Here's some reviews for the Playmate and other good entry-level guitars.

Why does it seem that acoustic guitars are becoming sooo popular?
Q. It just seems to me that alot of people are "trying" to learn to play the "acoustic" guitar. As I guitar player myself, I find it much more fun to play electric, although its not as accessable or convenient, it just seems more fun to me... I do love playing acoustic, and I respect the different forms that can be played on it, I just prefer electric. Lol, im not a junkie metalhead who thinks acoustic guitars are "gay"

A. It's not that acoustics are easier to learn or anything like that but they're much better to learn because the learner builds up more finger strength and gets a better idea and sound of each note. i think a lot of people play them because you can bring them anywhere and aren't as expensive for a beginner.

When did Yamaha start making acoustic guitars in China?
Q. Someone has an acoustic Yamaha model FG-something that they claim is 55 years old. It's labeled made in China but maybe that could also mean Taiwan? Is it possible the guitar is that old?
