A steel-string acoustic guitar is a modern form of guitar descended from the classical guitar, but strung with steel strings for a brighter, louder sound. They are often referred to simply as acoustic guitars, although strictly speaking the nylon-strung classical guitar is acoustic as well. The most common type can be called a flat-top guitar to distinguish it from the more specialized archtop guitar and other variations.

The standard tuning for an acoustic guitar is E-A-D-G-B-E (low to high), although many players, particularly fingerpickers, use alternate tunings (scordatura), such as "open G" (D-G-D-G-B-D), "open D tuning" (D-A-D-F♯-A-D), or "drop D" (D-A-D-G-B-E).

Construction

There are many different variations on the construction of, and materials used in, steel-string guitars. The various combinations of the different woods and their quality, along with design and construction elements (for example, how the top is braced), are among the factors affecting the timbre or "tone" of the guitar. Many players and builders feel a well-made guitar's tone improves over time.

What's the Difference bettween Classic Guitars and Acoustic Guitars? and the different types of strings?
Q. I am a beginner and I'm using my dad's old guitar and I think it's a classic guitar, based on shape. But what is the difference as far as sound, difficulty, and how does it compare with acoustic guitars? Also I can't tell the difference on strings so if someone could help that would be great.

A. Acoustic simply means that it is designed to produce sound without electricity. Classical guitars are nylon stringed acoustic guitars, although the exact shape, size , materials, and construction techniques vary from steel string acoustics. If the smallest strings are steel it is not a classical, if the smallest strings are nylon, it may be a classical or a "Folk" guitar. I love classical guitars' sound and ease of playing and primarily practice on them. They are easier to play and sound better, to me, than steel string acoustics. You can get a bit more volume out of a steel string. I'll try to find you a chart or list of different acoustics and give you the link below.

Are there any acoustic guitars that look like electrics?
Q. I like the acoustic sound but not the look. Is there any brands of guitars that have a different design?

A. Yes, the Ovation guitars. I think you will find that they are the only guitar that doesn't look like an acoustic but still sounds almost as good as one. You will not find an acoustic guitar that will sound just as good if it looks electric. Hollowbodies, semi-hollowbodies sound very mid range and lack the bass that a decent acoustic has. You can also find very specailized guitars that are syth driven, and so can be played with Nylon strings, or steel strings, and can sound like a variety of guitars. I don't quite buy it, but that is their claim. So, you can take a strat, put a Roland pickup on it, feed it through the synth, and it will sound 'acoustic'. At least to some people's ears, I suppose.

Has anybody ever heard of cameo acoustic guitars?
Q. I'm learning to play guitar for the first time and I'm looking to buy a good acoustic guitar. Does anyone know if cameo acoustic guitars work well? Also, what are some other good brands that you would reccomend?

A. i think they are called 'seagull artist cameo' guitars...they are a relatively recent company in the guitar business that didnt make it and now are no longer in business...so that means you could pick up one of their guitars very cheaply, but it will only depreciate in value and NOT appreciate like you would like...if you have found one, and played one, and like the sound then im sure you could get a good deal on one...the most important ingredient is does the guitar provide the particular sound that YOU like...name brands are meaningless~
