Ancient history is the study of the written past from the beginning of recorded human history in the Old World until the Early Middle Ages in Europe and the Qin Dynasty in China.

The period or era following these events includes the Imperial era in China and the period of the Middle Kingdoms in India; The span of recorded history altogether is roughly 5,000 years, with Sumerian cuneiform emerging from the protoliterate period around the 30th century BC being the oldest form of writing discovered so far. This is the beginning of history, as opposed to prehistory, according to the definition used by most historians.

The term classical antiquity is often used to refer to ancient history since the beginning of recorded Greek history in about 776 BC (First Olympiad). This coincides, roughly, with the traditional date of the founding of Rome in 753 BC, the beginning of the history of ancient Rome. Although the ending date of ancient history is disputed, Western scholars use the fall of the Western Roman Empire in AD 476, or the death of the emperor Justinian I, or the coming of Islam and the rise of Charlemagne as the end of ancient European history.

How did we first discover ancient egyptian mummies?
Q. I am doing a project on ancient Egypt and I need to figure out who and how first discovered, or revealed, ancient mummies, preferably from egypt.(not the discovery of how to make them, but them in general as a society.) How did we find out what hieroglyphics meant? Also if anyone has info on the art and/or proses of mummification that would help too.

A. Mummies have always been known. The medieval doctors of Alexandria in Egypt prescribed powdered mummy as a kind of wonder drug, and mummies were dug up and made into medicine until the 18th century! The earliest public unwrapping of a mummy was conducted in Cairo in 1698. Through experimentation, the Egyptians discovered that decomposition worked largely from the inside out. Bacteria collected first in the body's internal organs and moved on from there. To stop the putrefaction process, the embalmers realized, they would have to remove the internal organs. This, combined with the discovery of the natural drying agent natron, led to the famous Egyptian mummies we know today. The science and theology of embalming continued to evolve over… [cont.]

A. After Alexander the Great took over Egypt the two religions started to mangle with each other. Temples of Egyptian gods were build in Greece and of Greek gods in Egypt. During that era (called the Hellenistic period) new gods were created. For example Serapis a healer god, had his great temple the Sarapion build in Alexandria. There Greeks, whose religion was more anthropocentric, influenced the Egyptians into seeing their gods as more loving and less demanding. During that period we also have a mixture in art. For example we see statues of gods with Egyptian-like bodies and clothes but Greek-style faces. For example figures of Isis-Aphrodite or Amon Rah Alexander the Great.

What is a good major/job involving ancient cultures?
Q. I'm really interested in ancient cultures, like studying Egyptians and the Mayans and old cultures like that. What would be some ideal jobs involving that and possibly some archeology? Not really teaching though. Hope I've been clear! Thanks everyone! All of these sound pretty fun, especially the curator bit, as I really enjoy the historical artifacts aspect of cultures. Also, more specifically, jobs in places like Egypt, South America, Greece, places like that.

A. Art history maybe? A lot of old cultures are really mostly researched and told about through their art. You could concentrate in a specific area of the world or specific race or culture if you find there's one that you like better than the others.
