Is the Azan, the 5 times daily call to prayer, getting louder and longer in northern Sumatra?
Q. Berastagi in the Karo Highlands has always been a predominantly Christian town, as the local Batak people are Christian. There are new mosques all over the town as wealthy Muslims from Medan, the main city, have moved here. The call to prayer now resounds all over Berastagi at high volume, waking everyone at 4.30am and going on for an hour, after which the barking dogs and crowing cocks make it impossible to go back to sleep before the noises of the day resume at 6 or 7 o'clock. When one mosque ends its din, others are still screaming away. They are never co-ordinated. This is despite the fact that 90% of the people are still Christians. The origins of the azan tradition are found in the Middle East at a time when most people worked on… [cont.]

A. This hardly seems to be about human rights, as one answer implied; nobody (in the question) is trying to stop the azan. They're just commenting on excessive noise at 4.30 a.m. in one town in Sumatra. Perhaps the issue is about 'in-your-face' attitudes - a minority trying to make their presence felt? There's no comparison with church bells, as another answerer implied. Certainly, in the West, it happens spasmodically and only in England, once a week. If it happens a lot in a Muslim area he lives in, perhaps it's just to show that they won't be intimidated (i.e., silenced) by the azan. Some national groups LIKE to be noisy, after all, and that's fine for them! But the question deals with one particular town in Sumatra, where it might be… [cont.]

A. Just opened up the whole can of worms now didn't you? --arewether the "Oneness Pentecostals" (often called "Jesus only") don't believe in the trinity, believe you aren't saved unless you are specifically baptized in the name of Jesus--not Father, Son, Holy Ghost, and you must speak in tongues or you don't have the spirit.
