Bone density (or bone mineral density) is a medical term referring to the amount of matter per square centimeter of bones. Note that this is not a true "density", which would be measured in mass per cubic area. It is measured by a procedure called densitometry, often performed in the radiology or nuclear medicine departments of hospitals or clinics. The measurement is painless and non-invasive and involves minimal radiation exposure. Measurements are most commonly made over the lumbar spine and over the upper part of the hip. The forearm is scanned if either the hip or the lumbar spine can't be. Average density is around 1500 kg m TermsResults are often reported in 3 terms:

From Google News Search: "bone density" What does a "low normal" bone density test mean? Q. Last week I had a bone density test; yesterday the office called, said my test was in the "low normal" range, and they would see me in two years. What does "low normal" mean and what should I be doing for myself within those two years? I should add that I'm 51 and have had a hysterectomy. Asked by Susi - Tue Jun 10 12:30:36 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. It means it's at the lower end of the normal range. So it's still okay but if it has got any lower in the next two years, they may recommend treatment such as HRT (if you are not already on it). In the meantime you may want to try taking Vitamin D and Calcium Supplements. Also strength training 2-3 times a week very good for strengthening bones. Hope this helps. There are many ways that are used for bone density scans today. The type you get depends on where you live and what type the doctor orders. The DXA density scan takes the entire body and scans every joint so that it's a more advanced and informative scan. Years ago I used a machine where the arm from the wrist to the elbow was immersed in water and then scanned. Your question is other than this so I can tell you that there is a yearly infusion available in and around cities now. A Rheumatologist is the type doctor that does the infusion, but you don't have to have RA it's just that these are the doctors that do the infusions after the bone scans tell that they can actually help. There is a condition called orthopenia, that people get just… [cont.] Answered by namairb2 - Tue Jun 2 21:42:09 2009 From Yahoo Answer Search: "bone density" |
