Bone density (or bone mineral density) is a medical term referring to the amount of matter per square centimeter of bones. Note that this is not a true "density", which would be measured in mass per cubic area. It is measured by a procedure called densitometry, often performed in the radiology or nuclear medicine departments of hospitals or clinics. The measurement is painless and non-invasive and involves minimal radiation exposure. Measurements are most commonly made over the lumbar spine and over the upper part of the hip. The forearm is scanned if either the hip or the lumbar spine can't be. Average density is around 1500 kg m TermsResults are often reported in 5 terms:

A bone scan refers to using Tc-99-radiolabeled MDP and then using a special camera which detects areas of inflammation in nuclear medicine (it's also called skeletal scintigraphy). Bone densitometry/DEXA is a method of checking how much mineral is lost in a patient at risk for osteopenia or osteoporosis. Typically, in bone densitometry/mineral density scanning, the femoral neck and lumbar spine are used to determine how much mineral has been lost (using an x-ray beams) and comparing it to normal of the same age and assigning a score to this. So basically, this is a test for the degree of osteopenia/osteoporosis in the patient whereas the bone scan looks for areas of inflammation in bone (from just about… [cont.] Answered by R.
