Ballet is a formalized kind of performance dance, which originated in the Italian Renaissance courts of the 15th century, and which was further developed in France, England, and Russia as a concert dance form. The early portions preceded the invention of the proscenium stage and were presented in large chambers with most of the audience seated on tiers or galleries on three sides of the dancing floor. It has since become a highly technical form of dance with its own vocabulary. It is primarily performed with the accompaniment of classical music. It has been influential as a form of dance globally and is taught in ballet schools around the world, which use their own cultures and societies to inform the art. Ballet dance works (ballets) are choreographed and performed by trained artists, include mime and acting, and are set to music (usually orchestral but occasionally vocal). It is a poised style of dance that incorporates the foundational techniques for many other dance forms. This type of dancing is very hard to achieve and takes much practice to master. It is best known in the form of Late Romantic Ballet or Ballet Blanc, which preoccupies itself with the female dancer to the exclusion of almost all else, focusing on pointe work, flowing, precise acrobatic movements, and often presenting the dancers in the conventional short white French tutu. Later developments include expressionist ballet, Neoclassical ballet, and elements of Modern dance. The etymology of the word "ballet" is related to the art form's history. The word ballet comes from the French and was borrowed into English around the 17th century. The French word in turn has its origins in Italian balletto, a diminutive of ballo (dance). Ballet ultimately traces back to Latin ballare, meaning to dance. From Wikipedia under the

I am thirteen years old and have never danced/done ballet, but I have alright flexability. I am starting ballet lessons in a little while, but what stretches can I do before I start, so I can catch up with some of the other girls? Is it too late to start competing in dancing? I would be dedicated to practising, but am I too old now? Also I have nearly done the splits, but I am about 15cm from the floor. I just can't seem to get all the way! What stretches would be good so I can get the whole way down? Asked by cattie2024 - Fri Apr 20 07:03:06 2007 - - 10 Answers - 2 Comments A. 1. Some stretches you can do: Sit with your legs bent, the soles of your feet touching eachother, like a triangle. Try to get it as close to you as you can and push your knees down. Sit with your legs straight and together. Grab your toes and try to put your head on your knees. Stand with your legs apart (wide) and bend down as far as you can, keep your back straight and your bottom in. Sit with your legs straight, together and point, trying to get your toes to the floor. Caution:: Do not stretch too hard, you might pull a muscle. If you pull a muscle, it'll take a while for it to wear off. 2. It's certainly not too late to start competing! 3. You're not too old!!! I know of a ballerina who started at thirteen. If only i could… [cont.] Answered by LiSa - Fri Apr 20 07:21:06 2007 I am trying to get into beginning ballet at 16 , how should I get physicaly ready? Q. My son is starting ballet class and we ordered him some toddler ballet shoes. Is it okay for him to wear them across our apartment parking lot to the car, then from the car across the gym's parking lot into the gym? Or should he wear his normal shoes, then change at the gym? He'll be wearing knee high black socks under the slippers; I wasn't sure if that mattered. Thanks! Asked by Erica - Thu Mar 20 12:01:23 2008 - - 15 Answers - 0 Comments A. NO! Dance shoes should only be worn in dance class or at home. Never outside. Even that little bit of walking can ruin the bottom of the ballet slipper and he would be bring in moisture, pollen and dirt onto the dance floor.
