Boxing (sometimes also known as "Western boxing" or "pugilism") is a combat sport where two participants, generally of similar weight, fight each other with their fists. Boxing is supervised by a referee and is typically engaged in during a series of one to three-minute intervals called rounds. Victory is achieved if the opponent is knocked down and unable to get up before the referee counts to ten seconds (a Knockout, or KO) or if the opponent is deemed too injured to continue (a Technical Knockout, or TKO). If there is no stoppage of the fight before an agreed number of rounds, a winner is determined either by the referee's decision or by judges' scorecards.

Although fighting with fists comes naturally to people, evidence of fist-fighting contests first appear on ancient Sumerian, Egyptian and Minoan reliefs. The ancient Greeks provide us our first historical records of boxing as a formal sport; they codified a set of rules and staged tournaments with professionals. The birth hour of boxing as a sport may be its acceptance as an Olympic game as early as 688 BC. Modern boxing evolved in Europe, particularly Great Britain.

In some countries with their own fighting sports, the sport is referred to as "English Boxing" (e.g. in France to contrast with French boxing, or in Burma with Burmese boxing and in Thailand with Thai boxing). There are numerous different styles of boxing practised around the world.

How come someone from one boxing organization can hold a title from another?
Q. Lets say Boxer A is in the WBC (World Boxing Council.) He weighs 190lbs, so he would be in the Junior Heavyweight division. He wins the WBC Junior Heavyweight Championship, yet also hold the World Boxing Organization (WBO)'s Junior Heavyweight title at the same time. How can they do this?
Asked by Animal 22 - Sat Oct 11 20:13:18 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. They can hold titles in more than one weight class. It is perfectly allowed, it's been done before by plenty of people. You just have to come back up or down to defend the titles against the number one contenders every six months. But it gets tiring very fast which is why things like this don't last very long and they often choose to vacate one. Also after a while the two organizations will make you pick after it starts to affect their business. But as long as you the necessary defense it is allowed.

How do you start a career for bare-knuckle boxing?
Q. Where would one go to start a career in bare-knuckle boxing, like Kimbo Slice? Do they start with a talent agent? I am in Michigan. Thanks
Asked by kosm - Tue Jun 3 15:25:56 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The cops let Kimbo do it since there were rules to the fight and it was consentual, but it has to be set up where the rules are there and you have a set time where the fight would stop. As for selling out events not gonna happen, but you get it on you tube and set up a webpage then you get your money. Everyone that has to run their mouth about Kimbo being a joke in the MMA world remember what the question was instead of trying to make someone say wow he's a hardcore fan. You don't like it don't answer the question get your 2 points somewhere else.

Boxing also called prizefighting (when referring to professional boxing), the sweet science (a common nickname among fans) or the gentleman's sport (used mainly in England), is a sport and martial art in which two participants of similar weight classification fight each other with their fists in a series of one to three-minute intervals called "rounds".
