In architecture a corbel (or console) is a piece of stone jutting out of a wall to carry any superincumbent weight. A piece of timber projecting in the same way was called a "tassel" or a "bragger". The technique of corbelling, where rows of corbels deeply keyed inside a wall support a projecting wall or parapet, has been used since Neolithic times. It is common in Medieval architecture and in the Scottish baronial style as well as in the Classical architectural vocabulary, such as the modillions of a Corinthian cornice and in ancient Chinese architecture. The word "corbel" comes from Old French and derives from the Latin corbellus, a diminutive of corvus (a raven) which refers to the beak-like appearance. Similarly, the French refer to a bracket-corbel, usually a load-bearing internal feature, as corbeau (a crow). A cul-de-lampe is a kind of bracket-corbel supporting a vault; the term is also used for a corbel with a tapering base. Italians use mensola, the Germans, Kragstein. The usual word in modern French for a corbel in the context of Classical architecture is modillon. In traditional Chinese architecture, such a load-bearing structural element, made of stone or wood, is called dougong and has been used since the late centuries BCE. From Wikipedia under the

Q. I have just had the sign to my shop front replaced, however in replacement, one of the side pilasters/capitals has cracked and broken. These are made from a concrete mixture, I think, and painted, over the years deteriorated so crumbling was to be expected. I have search the net for answers but can't seem to find if the square decorative parts, which are only decorative, are called pilasters, capitals, consoles or corbels. There are two, one either side of the shop front, at the top, and protrude slightly from the wall. My question is how do I repair them? I don't want to get someone to do this as we did had them repaired last year and the builder made a mess of the job. I would like to get them back to original shape, basically like a… [cont.] Asked by 32alan - Fri Aug 3 06:36:45 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. . firstly anything that jutts out of a wall is called apilaster and a free standing one is called a capital. you can repair that by simply taking a bag of readymix concreta and fill the fissures or the part that has come out. but please be sure that the surface you are putting this mixture is coarse( just puncture it if not so) so that the mixture binds to it and cure it by covering with wet gunny bags for 3 days.hope this helps!
