How much do flying lessons cost?
Q. I want to learn how to fly and I was wondering if anyone knew how much flying lessons cost. I would like to get to a point where I can fly a small plane about 300 miles to my parents cottage on a lake.

A. If you are in the US, go for you Private License. I know many will tell you to go Sport or Recreational, but the Private will allow you more freedom at a lower overall cost. Nowdays, aircraft rent for $80-100/hr and a good instructor will run $15-18/hr. Minimum hours required are 40, but the national average is between 56 and 72 hours. Don't forget testing fees, possible ground school costs (rare for Private), and Examiner fees. Figure about $4-5000 if you want a good, solid and SAFE experience. A little higher than some would want to pay, but the Private license it definitley worth it. You could go for sport or recreational and test up for less money in the beginning, but if you go the Private route from the get go, as a long time… [cont.]

What is with Palin flying her family on campaign?
Q. I've heard so much bull on plane trips for the Palin family, but NO ONE thinks its a problem that Biden has been flying, quiet often according to US News, his grandchildren, niece, and nephew. This was in the US News periodical for Oct. 2008. Is there only a problem if a mom who is the actual one responsible for her children flies her kids with her but it is OK if Uncle Joe and Grandpa flies his extended family members with him?

A. It is ethical and all the candidates are doing it. However, the Democrats do not want to apply the old saying, "If it is good for the goose, it is good for the gander." No, I have no problem with any of the candidates flying their families. Of course, it never became an issue before we had a woman candidate. This world is so full of sexists.

Flying Overseas: Why is east to west Slower than flying west to east on an Airplane?
Q. When flying from Canada or America to Europe the flight over is slower than the flight back. Some say it is the tail winds , others the earths rotation. What do you think ?

A. Airspeed over ground is faster going west to east, in most cases, due to the Jet Streams. The Jet Streams are high speed channels of air that move around the world in a, more or less, West to East direction. These channels of air are studied by air crews when they plan long flights to come up with a ETA and know how much fuel they will need to complete the flight. In WWII these winds were poorly understood; and a lot of planes were lost due to running out of fuel after running into strong head winds, or flying past their home base due to unknown tail winds. Even as late as 1946, a Pan AM Clipper (flying boat) flying from Spain to New York, ran out of fuel in mid-ocean due to very high head winds ( a Jet Stream). Flying East to West… [cont.]
