From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. A gear is a rotating machine part having cut teeth, or cogs, which mesh with another toothed part in order to transmit torque. Two or more gears working in tandem are called a transmission and can produce a mechanical advantage through a gear ratio and thus may be considered a simple machine. Geared devices can change the speed, magnitude, and direction of a power source. The most common situation is for a gear to mesh with another gear, however a gear can also mesh a non-rotating toothed part, called a rack, thereby producing translation instead of rotation. The gears in a transmission are analogous to the wheels in a pulley. An advantage of gears is that the teeth of a gear prevent slipping. When two gears of unequal number of teeth are combined a mechanical advantage is produced, with both the rotational speeds and the torques of the two gears differing in a simple relationship. In transmissions which offer multiple gear ratios, such as bicycles and cars, the term gear, as in first gear, refers to a gear ratio rather than an actual physical gear. The term is used to describe similar devices even when gear ratio is continuous rather than discrete, or when the device does not actually contain any gears, as in a continuously variable transmission. The earliest known reference to gears was circa 50 A.D. by Hero of Alexandria, but they can be traced back to the Greek mechanics of the Alexandrian school in the 3rd century BC and were greatly developed by the Greek polymath Archimedes (287-212 BC). GNU Free Documentation License What is the best gear to use over medium length distances? Q. In cycling, to get more speed up is it easier to spin faster in a medium gear or push harder in a low gear. How do you know when you are at your optimum gear. Asked by H J - Wed Feb 25 04:05:19 2009 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments A. You want to pedal at a high cadence 70-90 rpm's with a lite pressure on the pedals. That will allow your body to use fat as a fuel and wont tire your legs. Pedaling slow and mashing on the pedals will use your fast twitch muscles that use glycogen as fuel and you wont last as long. You want to pedal at a fast cadence with a lite pressure in the gear that increases your breathing to the point where you can still talk but not sing. If you need to catch your breath drop gown a gear or two and keep pedaling at 70 rpm's. You want to be changing gears to keep you in the most efficient 70-90 rpm's for the body. What do I need to buy so I have the correct gear? Is ther a package out there for beginners? Could you direct me to any sites to read up on this? Could you give me advice from your own experience? Thanks a million. Asked by C K - Tue Nov 17 18:01:44 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Hello there. I live in the "Great Lakes" area of the US. I am an avid fisherman of trout and salmon. I think the first thing to consider is to match the prey of the salmon you're targeting. Generally, spoons, spinners, and crank baits are what we use here. As far as equipment, I'd start with a medium action rod and a equivalent reel that has a good drag. These fish are pure muscle, and if your drag is not set properly, they will snap you off frequently. Best of luck in your fishing. Q. I thought it was a higher gear uphill and a low gear downhill? I took a test that said otherwise...Thanks! Asked by sammyd - Sat Nov 10 18:40:22 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. You put it in the gear that keeps the power within the powerband, otherwise you lug the motor and consume more fuel than you should. This causes overheating, pinging and poor detonation which after a LONG time leads to premature crank bearing failure. Downhill it's lower numerical gears to keep the rpm's higher thus using the engine along with the brakes. Higher RPM's also equal more brake pressure. One note: When your engine is running in a deceleration with no pressure on the gas pedal your ECM will actually stop spraying the fuel injectors THUS you are using NO fuel to run the brake booster, A/C, and alternator along with the Power Steering pump if it's run off the engine. Basically it's free power to run the accessories and reduces… [cont.] Answered by Todd A - Sat Nov 10 19:20:49 2007 From Yahoo Answer Search: "gear" Gear : National Geographic's World Atlas app
