Granite (pronounced /ˈɡrænɨt/) is a common and widely occurring type of intrusive, felsic, igneous rock. Granites usually have a medium to coarse grained texture. Occasionally some individual crystals (phenocrysts) are larger than the groundmass in which case the texture is known as porphyritic. A granitic rock with a porphyritic texture is sometimes known as a porphyry. Granites can be pink to gray in color, depending on their chemistry and mineralogy. By definition, granite has a color index (i.e. the percentage of the rock made up of dark minerals) of less than 25%. Outcrops of granite tend to form tors, and rounded massifs. Granites sometimes occur in circular depressions surrounded by a range of hills, formed by the metamorphic aureole or hornfels.

Granite is nearly always massive (lacking internal structures), hard and tough, and therefore it has gained widespread use as a construction stone. The average density of granite is located between 2.65 and 2.75 g/cm, its compressive strength usually lies above 200 MPa and its viscosity at standard temperature and pressure is 3-6 • 10 Pa·s.

The word granite comes from the Latin granum, a grain, in reference to the coarse-grained structure of such a crystalline rock.

Granitoid is used as a descriptive field term for general, light colored, coarse-grained igneous rocks for which a more specific name requires petrographic examination.

How do I cut granite floor tiles?
Q. I have tiled many times before, just not with granite. I have a diamond blade tile cutter, and the usual tile snapper. My 'power glide' snapper doesn't mention that I can snap granite tiles with it, therefore how do I cut to size granite tiles? Do I have to put each tile through the electric tile cutter, won't the edges of the tile risk getting chipped? Also do I have to get a special adhesive for the granite tiles (other than normal wood-to floor adhesive) to stick them down?

A. You can use the diamond blade tile cutter but to avoid chipping use it very slowly with lots of water and if possble with the tile upside down. As for securing the tiles to the floor you need a suitable stone adhesive and follow the instructions as some of the more porous granites will show the colour of the adhesive through them and so therefore may need sealing beforehand.

What is the best way to clean a granite floor and countertop?
Q. I believe my counter and floor are granite or some kind of dark stone. When i clean with most cleaning products it leaves a residue after wiping. Is there anything besides just plane water that i can use to clean?

A. Don't use an ordinary kitchen cleaning product to clean granite. The newest technology uses peroxide and detergents to penetrate soiled areas. Simply spray a product such as Bio-OX Citrus Concentrate on the soiled area, allow it to penetrate for a few minutes, then wipe clean. Baking soda can be sprinkled on for a more abrasive cleaning action. Repeat if necessary. Granite can also be cleaned using warm, sudsy water (a mild detergent such as a grease cutting dish detergent or laundry detergent is fine) or a solution of borax and water. Thoroughly rinse and buff dry. To remove stains from granite, make a paste of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide or baking soda and Bio-OX Citrus Concentrate and cover the stain with the paste. Cover the… [cont.]
