Jazz is a music genre that originated at the beginning of the 20th century in African American communities in the Southern United States from a confluence of African and European music traditions. From its early development until the present, jazz has incorporated music from 19th and 20th century American popular music. Its West African pedigree is evident in its use of blue notes, improvisation, polyrhythms, syncopation, and the swung note. However, Art Blakey has been quoted as saying, "No America, no jazz. I’ve seen people try to connect it to other countries, for instance to Africa, but it doesn’t have a damn thing to do with Africa".

The word "jazz" (in early years also spelled "jass") began as a West Coast slang term and was first used to refer to music in Chicago in about 1915.

From its beginnings in the early 20th century jazz has spawned a variety of subgenres: New Orleans Dixieland dating from the early 1910s, big band-style swing from the 1930s and 1940s, bebop from the mid-1940s, a variety of Latin jazz fusions such as Afro-Cuban and Brazilian jazz, free jazz from the 1950s and 1960s, jazz fusion from the 1970s, acid jazz from the 1980s (which added funk and hip-hop influences), and Nujazz in the 1990s. As the music has spread around the world it has drawn on local national and regional musical cultures, its aesthetics being adapted to its varied environments and giving rise to many distinctive styles.

How can i get my jazz shoes from slipping and sliding around? And where to get rosin/resin powder?
Q. I think rosin powder is used to keep dance shoes from slipping on the floor. Is that right? And i want to use it on my jazz shoes because they keep on sliding around on the floors. Do u know where to get it? (preferably not online) And is there anything else i could use to keep my jazz shoes from sliding all over the place? Help would be greatly appreciated =] They are sort of new, ive used them about 10 times and what do you mean break them in?

A. Well it depends, if they are new shoes. I would break em in before you put anything on them. Or do turns on cement. It works pretty good, i have done it before. If they are old, then i think its time to get a new pair of shoes.

Whats an easy way to remember Jazz sounds and music for my test?
Q. My jazz midterm is next week and its really hard to memorize the music of early jazz. Im required to named the song or artist of the song playing. This music is from the 1900s+ so it covers Louis armstrong/Ken Burns/Duke Ellington/Ella/Benny Goodman etc. If anyone can give me a good strategy as to how i can memorize them, like certain instrument tunes etc, thatd be wonderful. Thanks!

A. Well, Ken Burns is a documentary filmmaker, so he shouldn't even be on the list lol. Louis Armstrong played trumpet and sang. One of his big hits was "Jeepers Creepers", because legend had it that he couldn't remember the words of his songs and made up new ones. All I can say about Duke is that early Duke to me sounds "modern". No one had harmonies like Duke. Check out an old recording [and I do mean the oldest you can find] of his group playing "Caravan". It sounds like it's from a different planet or something. Not by today's standards, maybe, but for the time. His chord voicings [which instruments play which notes] were unique and gave his group a distinctive sound. Duke played piano, so there might be a piano poking in and out. Be… [cont.]

What song is good for year 12 moderation next year for jazz piano?
Q. Im after a few songs that would be a good idea for my final moderation next year. I like to play jazz as i would like to go to uni to be a teacher and out of jazz and classical i would like jazz. Would be great if it was a challenge song and one that can be technical. Thanks guys...

A. i would ask a Jazz Piano Teacher for a complex song, written by someone famous (maybe a song from a Jazz grade book), then I would play some standards (Autumn Leaves, Georgia on my Mind, Fly Me To The Moon, Moonlight in Vermont, etc) in a "challenging way". Try to find ways of playing a few standards, uniquely and interestingly. Jazz is not all about the complexities, or technicalities, but the ability to create your own way and style of approaching it. if you can show a versatility of complex, creative songs, it should do you great.

Jazz music

  • "By and large, jazz has always been like the kind of a man you wouldn't want your daughter to associate with."
  • "Jazz is the false liquidation of art—instead of utopia becoming reality it disappears from the picture."
  • "Jazz is something Negroes invented, and it said the most profound things—not only about us and the way we look at things, but about what modern democratic life is really about. It is the nobility of the race put into sound ... jazz has all the elements, from the spare and penetrating to the complex and enveloping. It is the hardest music to play that I know of, and it is the highest rendition of individual emotion in the history of Western music."
  • "What makes the performance is the dialogue created between you and everybody around you spontaneously. And you have to interact with everybody up there, interacting and reacting, throwing out ideas. Jazz is a purely democratic music. It's collective creativity where somebody introduces something and we all get a chance to say something about it. It always amazes me, the whole of it is just a great spirit. It grabs you to the point where it never lets you go until the very last breath."
    • Max Roach
  • "There is nothing but jazz."
    • Konrad Stragier in a poem
  • "Jazz is not a 'form' but a collection of tags and tricks."
    • Ernest Newman. The Sunday Times, "The World of Music", 4 September 1927.
