Jazz is a musical art form which originated at the beginning of the 20th century in African American communities in the Southern United States from a confluence of African and European music traditions. The style's West African pedigree is evident in its use of blue notes, improvisation, polyrhythms, syncopation, and the swung note.

From its early development until the present, jazz has also incorporated music from 19th and 20th century American popular music. The word jazz began as a West Coast slang term of uncertain derivation and was first used to refer to music in Chicago in about 1915; for the origin and history, see Jazz (word).

Jazz has, from its early 20th century inception, spawned a variety of subgenres, from New Orleans Dixieland dating from the early 1910s, big band-style swing from the 1930s and 1940s, bebop from the mid-1940s, a variety of Latin jazz fusions such as Afro-Cuban and Brazilian jazz from the 1950s and 1960s, jazz-rock fusion from the 1970s and late 1980s developments such as acid jazz, which blended jazz influences into funk and hip-hop. As the music has spread around the world it has drawn on local national and regional musical cultures, its aesthetics being adapted to its varied environments and giving rise to many distinctive styles.

Why take jazz and tap when what you really want to do is ballet?
Q. My daughter has been taking tap, jazz, and ballet for 8 years (she's 14). She's been en pointe for 3 years and has been taking lyrical and modern for 2 years. What she loves is ballet and pointe. She'd like to drop tap and jazz (and possibly modern) and take more pointe class and more ballet. Is it too early for her to specialize? Or, is there a good reason for her to keep taking the other disciplines that she's not really that interested in? Financially, we cannot handle adding more classes to what she's already taking, so in order for her to take more pointe classes and more ballet, something will have to give. Opinions?

A. If she really isn't interested in tap & jazz and she also doesn't foresee herself changing her mind, then I would say to go ahead and drop tap & jazz and only take the ballet & pointe classes. That isn't too young to specialize, in my studio, that's about the age when the "advanced" (aka: specialized) classes started and the "combo" classes (ballet/pointe, tap, jazz, lyrical combo class) dissolved.

A. I took the suggestion of Answerer Denise LaFrance and created a Playlist titled "Love Songs for Romantic Evenings" with more than 100 selections at The jazz artists below are a pretty good selection. Here are twenty romantic songs that might set the mood: Allan Jones - falling in love with love (Richard Rodgers (m) & Lorenz Hart (w), 1921, from the movie musical "The Boys from Syracuse," 1940) Dick Powell & Ruby Keeler - i only have eyes for you (Dames, 1934) Ginger Rogers & Fred Astaire - a fine romance (Swing Time, 1936) Chester Gaylord (1931) - would you like to take a walk? (Harry Warren (m), Mort Dixon & Billy Rose (w), 1930) The Hi-Lo's (1959) - love walked in {George Gershwin (m, 1930) & Ira Gershwin (w, 1937) for the… [cont.]

Jazz music

  • "By and large, jazz has always been like the kind of a man you wouldn't want your daughter to associate with."
  • "Jazz is the false liquidation of art—instead of utopia becoming reality it disappears from the picture."
  • "Jazz is something Negroes invented, and it said the most profound things—not only about us and the way we look at things, but about what modern democratic life is really about. It is the nobility of the race put into sound ... jazz has all the elements, from the spare and penetrating to the complex and enveloping. It is the hardest music to play that I know of, and it is the highest rendition of individual emotion in the history of Western music."
  • "What makes the performance is the dialogue created between you and everybody around you spontaneously. And you have to interact with everybody up there, interacting and reacting, throwing out ideas. Jazz is a purely democratic music. It's collective creativity where somebody introduces something and we all get a chance to say something about it. It always amazes me, the whole of it is just a great spirit. It grabs you to the point where it never lets you go until the very last breath."
    • Max Roach
  • "There is nothing but jazz."
    • Konrad Stragier in a poem
  • "Jazz is not a 'form' but a collection of tags and tricks."
    • Ernest Newman. The Sunday Times, "The World of Music", 4 September 1927.
