What is the best military law enforcement job?
Q. Army MP, Marine Corps MP, or Navy Master-at-Arms? What are the typical duties of each? Which is the most like civilian law enforcement? Also, is there anything in the way of Officer law enforcement positions in the military?

A. I served 6 years in the US Air Force Security Police (now called Security Forces) and loved it. After basic training we went to Camp Bullis north of San Antonio TX and did some combat training with the Army there. It lasted about 8 weeks I believe. I guarded uploaded nuclear weapons on fighter jets and the weapon storage areas which housed the nukes. Security Forces also has a position in which you perfrom mostly police officer duties. It used to be called Law Enforcement or L.E. Ask a recruiter about it. I am sure it has changed since the 1980's. I did SP duty for 6 years. Also attened college in Law Enforcement while on active duty (80% tuition paid by the USAF). Several of my cousins served int he Army as M.P.'s. They are all working… [cont.]

How does the process work in law enforcement careers?
Q. Does every cop start as a cadet and work their way up? For example, whats the experience needed for the higher-end desk jobs, did everyone start as a basic cop? Sorry if this is a broad question, i have no knowledge of the law enforcement field so please forgive me.

A. Here is the deal... You have to get hired by a police department and go to the academy. From there you go to the street and work in the Field Training Program with a training officer for months. After that you spend years on the street humping calls and if you are good enough, you may get promoted to Detective in like VICE or Property Crimes. Do that for years, and if you are good at that job you can get the nod to go to Robbery, Sex Crimes or the top of the line... Homicide. Along the way, you can study and take tons of career development courses and maybe get promoted to a supervisor roll, where I am now. You would go back to the street as a road supervisor and then maybe a supervisor in the Detective Bureau. And from there the… [cont.]

What are the duties of the different law enforcement agencies.?
Q. I am wondering what the different duties are of the various Law enforcement agencies, such as state patrol, Sherrifs's, and city police. Could a city police pull over a speeding car on the freeway? If there was a police chase that crossed multiple city's/Countys, how far can they follow? Etc. Thanks.

A. In California, all peace officers (police, sheriff's deputies, highway patrol) have full authority anywhere in the state. They each have primary areas of responsibility that they need to patrol, but if they are somewhere else for whatever reason, they still have their full law enforcement power. I would imagine other states to be similar.
