A museum is a building or institution which houses a collection of artifacts.

Museums collect and care for objects of scientific, artistic, or historical importance and make them available for public viewing through exhibits that may be permanent or temporary. Most large museums are located in major cities throughout the world and more local ones exist in smaller cities, towns and even the countryside.

Early museums began as the private collections of wealthy individuals, families or institutions of art and rare or curious natural objects and artifacts.

There are museums all over the world. The museums of ancient times, such as the Musaeum of Alexandria, would be equivalent to a modern graduate institute. The modern meaning of the word can be traced to the Museum of Pergamon in Anatolia, which displayed artwork.

What is the distance between the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre Museum and the Paris Sheraton Airport Hotel?
Q. I am planning to arrive in Paris by the Train from London via the English Channel. I wanted to know whether it is advisable to stay at the Sheraton Airport Hotel in Paris if I want to go sight-seeing to Eiffel Tower and Louvre Museum and the Bridge in Paris. Also, how long would it take to cover the whole of Paris (sight-seeing)? Is there any particular tour of Paris that I should be aware of? Please advise.

A. I agree: bad bad bad idea. Coming by train you will be lucky to arrive directly in downtown Paris so why stay at a hotel far out in the suburbs if you are coming to visit Paris? You could walk between the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre (3 km = under 2 miles) or take the metro or bus. Check the www.ratp.fr website to download maps and other info. How long it takes to cover the whole of Paris depends on your idea of sightseeing. 2 days is a bare minimum to get a glimpse of the main attractions. But you could stay weeks and not have time to enjoy everything either. No need to take tours unless maybe those bicycle tours, they are kinda fun and you learn a lot. A less sporty way of seeing the main attraction is the boat tours on the Seine. If… [cont.]

Best day of the week to visit the Field Museum in Chicago?
Q. Several questions: I'm planning on a trip to Chicago in middle of July, to spend about 3 days going to Field Museum and maybe other museums nearby. What day of the week is best to avoid the crowd? Both at the Field Museum and Museum of Science? Are there any decent hotels near walking distance to the museums? What area of the city is it located? Is it lakeside or north suburb? Money is not a problem, although I don't need to stay in a 4 star hotel or anything. I know I asked this question before but I'd like more input.

A. Well, ideally, visit the Field on July 14th, it's free that day: But generally if you visit the museums mid-week, those are the best days to go. The places get crazy on weekends. There aren't a lot of hotels within walking distance to the Museum of Science and Industry, but there are several not far from the Field Museum - the Essex Inn and Best Western Grant Park, for example. The Museum of Science and Industry is a bit remote, on the south side of Chicago, in Hyde Park, but is well worth the visit. It's a fantastic museum. The Field is more central, on the lake in the center of Chicago.

How do you get to the MET museum from jersey city by the subway?
Q. I plan to get off at 33rd street or world trade center, how do u get to the metropolitan art museum from there?

A. If you coming from Jersey City, most PATH from Hoboken goes to World Trade Center or Hoboken. Option 1: Take WTC-bound PATH to World Trade Center. Walk east to Broadway/Fulton St where you could catch uptown (4)(5) express straight to 86th St. Exit at SE corner stairs and make immediately right and walk west toward 86th St until you see park at 5th Av. Turn left and museum is on 82nd St. From 33rd St/6th Av/34th St-Herald Square. Take Queens-bound (N)(R)(W) to Lexington Av-59th St for uptown (4)(5) express at lower level or (6) local upper level to 86th St.
