From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. The term mythology can refer to either the study of myths or a body of myths. For example, comparative mythology is the study of connections between myths from different cultures, whereas Greek mythology is the body of myths from ancient Greece. The term "myth" is often used colloquially to refer to a false story; however, the academic use of the term generally does not refer to truth or falsity. In the study of folklore, a myth is a sacred narrative explaining how the world and humankind came to be in their present form. Many scholars in other fields use the term "myth" in somewhat different ways. In a very broad sense, the word can refer to any traditional story. Nature of mythsTypical characteristicsThe main characters in myths are usually gods or supernatural heroes. As sacred stories, myths are often endorsed by rulers and priests and closely linked to religion. In the society in which it is told, a myth is usually regarded as a true account of the remote past. In fact, many societies have two categories of traditional narrative—(1) "true stories", or myths, and (2) "false stories", or fables. Myths generally take place in a primordial age, when the world had not yet achieved its current form. They explain how the world gained its current form and how customs, institutions, and taboos were established. From Wikipedia under the

Reverend Willy Answered by Reverend Willy - Thu May 21 08:55:50 2009 Is there anything in mythology that talks about an extra soul? Q. I'm working on a character who has sort of an "extra soul", which departs from him and haunts another character. I was wondering if anyone knew of anything at all like that in mythology, it could really help me develop my story. Asked by A. Muffin - Wed Jan 28 23:33:49 2009 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments A. This theme was used in The Golden Compass series of fantasy books. In that story, people had a sort of second soul that looked like an animal. X-Files had an episode where a man's shadow could leave him to kill people. I don't know if this theme is in mythology, but it has been an idea in some religions and metaphysics. In ancient Egypt, a person was thought to have several parts to their soul. In Voudoo, there is a similar concept. In metaphysics a person is thought to have an astral body that could haunt someone. This is a good concept for a story. You should develop it more. - P. Answered by Persephone - Thu Jan 29 00:05:53 2009 Where can I get Greek and Norse mythology stories?
