Painting is the practice of applying paint, pigment, color or other medium to a surface (support base). The application of the medium is commonly applied to the base with a brush but other objects may be used. In art the term describes both the act and the result which is called a painting. Paintings may have for their support such surfaces as walls, paper, canvas, wood, glass, lacquer, clay or concrete. Paintings may be decorated with gold leaf, and some modern paintings incorporate other materials including sand, clay, and scraps of paper.

Painting is a mode of expression and the forms are numerous. Drawing, composition or abstraction and other aesthetics may serve to manifest the expressive and conceptual intention of the practitioner. Paintings can be naturalistic and representational (as in a still life or landscape painting), photographic, abstract, be loaded with narrative content, symbolism, emotion or be political in nature.

A portion of the history of painting in both Eastern and Western art is dominated by spiritual motifs and ideas; examples of this kind of painting range from artwork depicting mythological figures on pottery to Biblical scenes rendered on the interior walls and ceiling of The Sistine Chapel, to scenes from the life of Buddha or other scenes of eastern religious origin.

Why are old paintings more expensive and famous?
Q. Like the Mona Lisa and stuff. Paintings nowadays are the same quality as those before sometimes even better but how come they aren't as famous as those before even if modern paintings are good or better than old ones? I mean like I've heard of some famous paintings from the beginning of the 20th Century like 1912 or something like that.

A. That is just a misconception. There is an awful lot of non-famous and cheap old art around. Same as modern art. Let me explain. What an artist is payed for his work depends on his/her quality. Now when an artist dies the price of his/her work goes up. There will be no more of those so laws of economics come into effect. Saying that the longer someone is dead the more expensive the art isn't absolutely true, but for famous works of art it is. Inflaton is terible in the art world. :) Fact remains that living artists never made more money with art than today. And there are more and more artists in the world. In the old days it wasn't easier to be famous but if you were famous you were set for life. Today you are just the flavour of the… [cont.]

A. Try finding the Tourist information sites for each of those places, they should be able to put you in touch with souvenir suppliers. Alternatively look in e-bay

What do you call an artist who replicates famous paintings?
Q. I've been looking online for the correct term, I'm not sure if there really is one. I'm writing an essay and I need to know what the correct term would be for an artist who replicates famous paintings and sells them. By that I don't mean someone who tries to paint famous paintings and pass them off as the original, simply an artist who creates and sells replicas.

A. You could use the term "copyist" in this context.
