The concept of personhood (who is a person within a society) is the fundamental component of any selective concept of people. A distinction is maintained in philosophy and law between the notions "human being", or "man", and "person". The former refers to the species, while the latter refers to a rational agent (see, for example, John Locke's Essay concerning Human Understanding II 27 and Immanuel Kant's Introduction to the Metaphysic of Morals). Central issues of interest to people are the understanding of the human condition and the meaning of life, and survival. Religion, philosophy, and science show or represent modes and aspects of inquiry which attempt to investigate and understand the nature, behavior, and purpose of people. Sociology, economics, and politics represent modes by which people investigate how to maximize a collective survival strategy.

Islam recognizes the People of the Book as members of monotheistic faiths founded upon revelation related to its own faith. By contrast, in Judaism, the Jews are often said to be the chosen people, a concept modified by the Christian doctrine of the Elect.

Why do people attempt to reinforce or push their opinions on others through questions?
Q. I've noticed that a lot of the time on Y!A, people who post questions aren't actually looking for an answer, but instead a statement that will reinforce their opinion. Usually when someone responds with an answer they disagree with, they attempt to argue/debate with it. And other times, people are just trying to shove their opinion down your throat. Anyone else notice this? Does it annoy you? Why do people do this?

A. Yes, that's how it is one here. But that's ok. This is also a place of sharing. I like some of those questions. I learn from them sometimes or like you said, sometimes they stir a sort of debate. We can't really debate on here and I love to debate so I like it.

Why do people automatically assume that those who badmouth others have credibility?
Q. It seems that whenever someone starts a vicious rumor about another, people will automatically take that person's word as gospel without actually trying to get the maligned person's side of the story. Why is this? Why do people automatically assume that vicious rumors are true? Is it because people like to assume the worst about others?

A. Yes, I think you've answered your own question. When people do not feel good about themselves, they tend to want to believe the worst about other people. If you know someone who is self confident you will see that they do not harbours those same feelings These self confident people judge people on their own merits.

What do people think about a career as a careers guidance counsellor for young people?
Q. I'm thinking about a career in careers guidance counselling (in England) which I know now falls under the Connexions service. I was just wondering what people thought about it as a career. Is it rewarding? Having already worked in social services I am aware of the difficult people that you deal with but what I want to know do you feel as though you're making a difference and is it worthwhile?

A. I have a son due to leave school in May. I worry every day about him getting off to a good start and finding a worthwhile job. He has a hip problem, he is not above average academically but he is loyal, honest and hardworking. I hope with all my heart that there is someone at Connexions who cares enough to help him make a start in life as an adult, particularly because I do not live in England so what I can do for him is very limited. I am 55 and I still remember with appreciation what the youth employment service did to find work for me when I left school. If you are the kind of person who gains satisfaction from playing a pivotal role in making a start in life for young adults then there can be few jobs more important.

Quotes about people

  • A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky, dangerous animals, and you know it.
  • Show me a man or a woman alone and I'll show you a saint. Give me two and they'll fall in love. Give me three and they'll invent the charming thing we call 'society'. Give me four and they'll build a pyramid. Give me five and they'll make one an outcast. Give me six and they'll reinvent prejudice. Give me seven and in seven years they'll reinvent warfare. Man may have been made in the image of God, but human society was made in the image of His opposite number, and is always trying to get back home.
    • Glen Bateman, The Stand (C&U), 3rd paragraph of Chapter 42, by Stephen King
  • I judge people by what they might be,—not are, nor will be.
  • The people will live on. The learning and blundering people will live on.
    • Carl Sandburg (1878–1967), American poet. The People, Yes (1936)
