Nounpolice (uncountable)
From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. The police are persons empowered to enforce the law, protect property and reduce civil disorder. Their powers include the legitimized use of force. The term is most commonly associated with police services of a state that are authorized to exercise the police power of that state within a defined legal or territorial area of responsibility. Police forces are often defined as organizations separate from any military forces, or other organizations involved in the defense of the state against foreign aggressors; however, gendarmerie and military police are military units charged with policing. Law enforcement, however, constitutes only part of policing activity. Policing has included an array of activities in different situations, but the predominant ones are concerned with the preservation of order. In some societies, in the late 18 century and early 19 century, these developed within the context of maintaining the class system and the protection of private property. Alternative names for police force include constabulary, gendarmerie, police department, police service, crime prevention, protective services, law enforcement agency, civil guard or civic guard. Members can be police officers, troopers, sheriffs, constables, rangers, peace officers or civic/civil guards. Russian police and police of the Soviet-era Eastern Europe are (or were) called militsiya. The Irish police are called the Garda Síochána ("guardians of the peace"); a police officer is called a garda. As police are often in conflict with individuals, slang terms are numerous. Many slang terms for police officers are decades or centuries old with lost etymology. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License Why do police officers in US touch tail lights while approaching a stopped vehicle? Q. I saw it a lot of times in TV in those Police Video Movies. Like Most Shocking or Most Amazing Videos. What I did notice is, when a police pulls over a driver and stopping behind him and after getting out and approaching the vehicle, they always to touch the tail lights while walking towards the drivers seat. Younger cops do it to leave a "print" or a DNA leave in order to associate themselves with the auto in case something escalates - older cops as myself were trained to knock on the rear end of the auto to distract the operator and passengers in order for us to check the car more quickly and eliminate any element of surprise for anyone other than the stopping officer(s). Answered by Penguin_Bob - Fri Feb 26 17:59:11 2010 How do police forces typically react when finding criminal elements within its agencies?
Q. Revulsion and a demand for justice and the upholding of the law above all else including specific reputation ? Cover ups and denial of facts -- Turning a blind eye and hoping it sorts itself out ? Joining the criminal element because of a special status within the ranks that teaches police are above the law and therefore unable to break it and thus expanding the criminal elements into systemic wrong doing ? Seriously - Like any other organization that values its image and its reputation, a police organization would prefer - if possible - to handle the matter internally, rather than expose the department and all of its members to unnecessary embarrassment because of the actions of a few. Sometimes this works well - when an effective Internal Affairs department takes appropriate actions, and the offending members are subjected to internal discipline, and failing that - prosecution and confinement. Sometimes this doesn't work well - when well-meaning (or involved) supervisory chain members get in the way of an Internal Affairs investigation; or when the offense involved is simply too… [cont.] Answered by Hank Rearden - Mon Jul 19 12:30:38 2010 From Yahoo Answer Search: "police" Police shooting suspect faces life in prison after being charged - San Jose Mercury News
