In biology, a population (from Latin populationis), is the collection of inter-breeding organisms of a particular species; in sociology, a collection of human beings. Individuals within a population share a factor may be reduced by statistical means, but such a generalization may be too vague to imply anything. Demography is used extensively in marketing, which relates to economic units, such as retailers, to potential customers. For example, a coffee shop that wants to sell to a younger audience looks at the demographics of an area to be able to appeal to this younger audience.

How do I do this population growth problem, using the logistic equation, with differential equations?
Q. Consider a rabbit population P(t) satistying the logistic equation. If the intial population is 120 rabbits and there are 8 births per month and 6 deaths per month occurring at t=0, how many months does it take for P(t) to reach 95% of the limiting population M?

A. The differential form of the logistic equation is: dP/dt = r*P - (r/M)*P^2 where P is the population as a function of time r is the growth rate M is the carrying capacity (the limiting population) In the above equation, the first term on the right hand side represents unfetttered exponential growth of a population (i.e., the birth rate), while the second term represents the effects of competition and death. We can equate the first term with the birth rate to find the value of r for this problem: 8 rabbits/month = r*P(0) = r*120 rabbits r = 1/(15 month) Now equate the second term with the death rate to find M: 6 rabbits/month = 1/((15 month)*M) * (120 rabbits)^2 M = 160 rabbits The solution to the logistic differential equation is: [cont.]

How does the population paradox work in apportionment?
Q. I know what the population paradox is, but how does it work? Can someone give me an actual example with real numbers? I've read the Wikipedia article and so forth. All it says is "in the 1900s, Virginia lost a seat to Maine as a result of its population growing faster than Maine's". That's just the definition of the paradox all over again. I want an example with real numbers.

A. We'd die off due to overpopulation. There are tons of problems that can be listed because of being overpopulated but I think you get the idea.
