President is a title held by many leaders of organizations, companies, trade unions, universities, and countries. Etymologically, a "president" is one who presides, who sits in leadership (from Latin pre- "before" + sedere "to sit"; giving the term praeses). Originally, the term referred to the presiding officer of a ceremony or meeting (i.e., chairman), but today it most commonly refers to an official. Among other things, president today is a common title for the heads of state of most republics, whether popularly elected, chosen by the legislature or by a special electoral college. It is also often adopted by dictators.

What is the eligibility period to serve as president?
Q. Although one person is limited to two four year terms elected as president, if I recall correctly, an individual can actually serve more than eight years. For instance, the president resigns and then the vice-president finishes up the former president's term. After which I believe they can still run for two terms as president as long as their total time served does not exceed something on the order of nine years and change. My question is: How long is that eligibility period?

A. Ten years is the limit. For exactly the reason if the president dies in office than the VP can take over. That two years is added in there so that the VP can still have two full terms of their own.

How is President Bush's attitude currently towards economic woes different than Herbert Hoover?
Q. Herbert Hoover (Republican) is the U.S. president of course who was at the wheel when the last great depression started. He followed Warren Harding (Republican) and Calvin Coolidge (Republican) and they all had pretty much the same philosophy of who government is supposed to serve and how income tax rates should be cut severely.

A. The difference is that it took THREE Republican administrations during the 20s to destroy the economy but only ONE under Bush. Hoover, to me, is your classic textbook tragic figure. It wasn't his fault the stock market tanked, it just happened on his watch. Before being president Hoover was a great man, a real hero. Read about his life sometime. You will find very few men, especially among politicians, who did as much good as Hoover did in his career, or saved as many lifes and spared people as much suffering and misery. His big mistake was not in -causing- the stock market crash but in how he reacted. And in a way you can hardly blame him. Nothing on this scale had happened before in his lifetime. He knew, as GHW Bush knew, that… [cont.]

What would happen if nobody ran for president?
Q. OK I know that this is most likely never going to happen, and that's is totally a random question, but can you answer it anyways? Ok suppose nobody wanted to run for president. Who would continue to run the country? What if the current president and vice president, where not able to run due to who knows what reason, and then it was election time, and nobody wanted to run? Who would run the country? Or would some other high powered U.S somebody due the job? Can any please answer my question?

A. Presumably the sitting Speaker of the House would be appointed as President. That is, the line of succession would continue as if the President and VP had simultaneously stepped down or due to health reasons could not hold office.
