A pyramid (from Greek "πυραμίς" - pyramis) is a structure where the outer surfaces are triangular and converge at a point. The base of a pyramid can be trilateral, quadrilateral, or any polygon shape, meaning that a pyramid has at least three triangular surfaces (at least four faces including the base). The square pyramid, with square base and four triangular outer surfaces, is a common version.

A pyramid's design, with the majority of the weight closer to the ground, and with the pyramidion on top means that less material higher up on the pyramid will be pushing down from above: this distribution of weight allowed early civilizations to create stable monumental structures.

For thousands of years, the largest structures on earth were pyramids: first the Red Pyramid in the Dashur Necropolis and then the Great Pyramid of Khufu, both of Egypt, the latter the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World still remaining. It is still the tallest pyramid. The largest pyramid in the world ever built, by volume, is the Great Pyramid of Cholula, in the Mexican state of Puebla. This pyramid is still being excavated.

How does Mayan pyramids and Egyptian pyramids compare and contrast in structure?
Q. I would like some details and references on how Mayan and Egyptian pyramids compare and contrast in structure. I'm writting a paper on the topic.

A. I think this will give you some help The Mayan pyramids were combined temples and tombs, while the Egyptian pyramids were tombs with temples attached. Both had square bases and four sides, but they look very different. The true Egyptian pyramids are much larger than the Mayan pyramids, and have smooth sides and pointed tips. Originally, they were covered in white limestone and their tips were covered in gold so that they shone in Egypt's strong sunlight. The Maya pyramids are much later in date. They are stepped or tiered, with stairways to allow access to the flat top, which housed ceremonial buildings

Can I use the scientific method to prove that the Pyramids were created?
Q. Technically, is the questions "were the ancient Pyramids of Egypt created by humans?" testable under the specific definition of the scientific method.

A. Yes. To be a bit more accurate ... it is a statement that must be testable, not a question. A statement like "the ancient Pyramids were created by humans." 1. There needs to be evidence of the timescale in which the pyramids appeared (radiometric dating of how old they are). 2. Given this you need to produce a description of the *mechanism*. Who were these humans? What kind of mechanisms were available for them to use? Where were the materials obtained? 3. Find evidence not only that it *may* have occurred this way, but evidence that it actually did (some historical records, some physical evidence of th transport of the materials, etc.). 4. If you are talking about humans creating something, then some theory as to the *reason*… [cont.]

What was the motivation of the Egyptians for building the pyramids?
Q. Hey guys I am doing a research paper and I need some help. I need some good sources to find the answer of this question (What was the motivation of the Egyptians for building the pyramids?) A. This answer is about pyramids in Egypt. Pyramids were also constructed in ancient Greece and Mesoamerica. Flat topped pyramids were constructed in ancient China. Pyramids in Egypt served as tombs, initially only for kings and close members of the royal family, but eventually came to be used (in much smaller forms) by the general populace. The pyramid is thought to have developed out of the mastaba tomb. Mastaba is an Arabic word, meaning bench, which was applied to the flat-topped, slope sided superstructures of tombs. The pyramid is also thought to be associated with solar worship and the "ben-ben" stone which played a major role in sun worship and was vaguely pyramid shaped. In the 3rd Dynasty, several mastabas were stacked forming… [cont.]
