What role did cities played in the Roman Empire and in what ways were they important to Roman civilization?

In the Roman mind, cities formed its inhabitants into greater, abler, nobler beings.

The Franks developed the Carolingian script, which was the first writing system to introduce spacing and lower-case lettering. The Anglo-Saxons preserved Arthurian tales (originally Celtic).
