Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI) is the collective name for a number of activities to detect intelligent extraterrestrial life. SETI projects use scientific methods to search for electromagnetic transmissions from civilizations on distant planets. The United States government contributed to earlier SETI projects, but recent work has been primarily funded by private sources. There are great challenges in searching across the sky for a first transmission that could be characterized as intelligent, since its direction, spectrum and method of communication are all unknown beforehand. I think we should be focusing on the problems plaguing our planet instead of wasting untold billions of dollars, wandering around space or looking for little green men at the expense of valuable taxpayer money, especially during these hard times. I understand the value of exploring deep space and searching for possible life on other planets, but now is definitely not the time. Should budgets for NASA and SETI be frozen or slashed until the U.S. can handle its current crises? I'm fully aware of what NASA has contributed to society! But with the statement, "now is not the time" begs the question... "when is the time?" nasa and SETI are also have two different aims. SETI is quite pie in the sky, but I don't think is fully government funded. NASA is. Yet NASA and the research gone into space exploration has had a huge impact on modern society. Everything from your car's GPS navigation to your cell phone and the TV you watch. Hell, even Tang. Who knows what the future projects will yield for everyday life? I'm not for cutting or freezing NASA's budget, for that reason alone. I'm not for huge expansions either.
