Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI) is the collective name for a number of activities people undertake to search for intelligent extraterrestrial life. SETI projects use scientific methods to search for electromagnetic transmissions from civilizations on distant planets. The United States government contributed to earlier SETI projects, but recent work has been primarily funded by private sources.

There are great challenges in searching across the sky for a first transmission that could be characterized as intelligent, since its direction, spectrum and method of communication are all unknown beforehand. SETI projects necessarily make assumptions to narrow the search, and thus no exhaustive search has been conducted so far.

Many radio frequencies penetrate our atmosphere quite well, and this led to radio telescopes that investigate the cosmos using large radio antennas. Furthermore, the earth emits considerable radio radiation as a byproduct of communications such as TV and radio, and these radiations would be easy to recognize as artificial due to their repetitive nature and narrow bandwidths. If this is typical, one way of discovering an extraterrestrial civilization might be to detect non-natural radio emissions from a location outside our solar system.

Suppose that SETI picked up an alien civilization signal, how would this discovery impact mankind?
Q. Suppose that the SETI search is successful, and a clear signal is detected from an alien civilization later this year. What are your opinions on how such a discovery might change things for humankind in this century.

A. Some religious people will say they are all demons. Some religious people will hastily shuffle through their scriptures to find quotes that 'prove' they already knew about this. Some religious cults will spring up based around the alien signal, claiming it's the end of the world/dawn of a new age. Generally, religious people will go into a frenzy. Assuming you can get them to accept the signal is real. Just look at the ongoing saga with evolution vs creationism. Govts will probably start spending a lot more on space programs and some of the spy satellites will look out instead of in. The average Joe will give it about five minutes of brain time, as it won't affect his daily routine in the slightest. Scientists will start arguing over… [cont.]

How far do the signals sent out from SETI travel?
Q. Do they just travel forever, if we have been sending these signals for 30 years then they will have travelled 30 light years distance but what is the limit, will they just keep travelling to the edge of the galaxy or does the signal have only enough strength to travel a finite distance?

A. SETI doesn't send out signals--they only listenforpossible signals from other civilizations. If they did, the signal would travel forever, in theory. How far out it would be dectable is another matter. That would depend on the level of technology of any civilization that might be in a position to detect teem. A realy advanced planet might be able to detect any such signals hundreds of light years out.

How far would alien world be for SETI to detect radio signal and recognize as intelligent?
Q. If an alein world broadcast a TV signal. How far would they be for SETI to detect them at minimum strenght and still recognize it as intelligent. So Karman, if an earth standard TV signal strength broadcast from Alpha centari, we would not be able to recognize it (as an intelligent signal) with the most powerfull antena on earth?

A. I think your question is a bit vague. If they had a TV transmitter that was very powerful, we could receive the signal no matter what the distance. Of course the technology is not conceivable for us. But what if they modulated a star? We could receive it from millions of light years away. But, since our galaxy is some 60k lyr across, it would be more likely to receive something from less than that. As to the power required to transmit a TV signal to say Alpha Centauri (4.35 lyr) given our current technology, let see. Here is a quick free space loss equation we will calculate for a microwave link to Alpha Centauri: Free space loss = 36.56 + 20Log10(Frequency) + 20Log10(Distance in miles) X dB = 36 + 20*L10(2.4Ghz) + 20*L10(4.3*5.8 [cont.]
