Answered by bob j - Thu Mar 13 20:50:12 2008 Can a home computer be connected to a satillete dish to " listen" to space ? Q. My older son has 2 older computers he got at a auction , both with 20 gigs hard drive and 512 ram . He wants to get a satillite dish ( knows somebody getting rid of a old 6 foot dish ) and for a science project he wants to connect one of the computers to the dish and make a mini SETI sight , can this be done ? and how ? is there soft ware for this and were to get it . He is not doing well in science and I think this might get him interested in science and put forth more effort . Asked by lickit_suckit_slammit - Fri Jan 12 17:19:33 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. I'm certain it could be done, anything can be done. He can listen to the satellites that the dish was designed to listen to. He can try to listen to other satellites or transmissions. There are many reciever boxes capable of scanning the skies. A project like this could be very expensive and complicated. I would ask him to research it all via Google or Yahoo, and explain to you exactly what he intends to listen to, and how he plans to go about it. If he cant do that much, I'm guessing your next question is going to be "how do I dispose of a 6 foot satellite dish?". Good luck. If you want to try and get him interested in space and science, the SkyScout is a great learning too that's easy to use, and will actually teach him a lot.
