Sleep is a natural state of bodily rest observed in humans and other animals. It is distinguished from quiet wakefulness by a decreased ability to react to stimuli, and it is more easily reversible than hibernation or coma. It is common to all mammals and birds, and is also seen in many reptiles, amphibians, and fish. In humans, other mammals, and a substantial majority of other animals that have been studied (such as some species of fish, birds, ants, and fruit flies), regular sleep is essential for survival.

The purposes and mechanisms of sleep are only partly clear and are the subject of intense research.

What baby sleeping bag to use when the house is less than 16 degrees?
Q. My 25 month old uses a 2.5 tog sleeping bag, a vest and a long sleeved sleepsuit. However, as our house does not have central heating, the temperature falls below 16. Is the 2.5 sleeping bag still enough, or do I need to buy a heavier one?

A. have you considered a merino sleeping bag? merino wool is really warm and cuddly like microfleece but so so much better than fleece because it doesn't cause overheating. our house can dip below 18. i have a merino kids winter sleeping bag which keeps my son lovely warm on the cold nights but breathes and lets out body heat on warmer nights so he doesn't get uncomfortably hot. no need to worry about different tog ratings with merino. and it's entirely natural versus cheap synthetic stuff. you can get merino sleeping bags on amazon, babysleepbags.co.uk etc.

What do you call sleeping through the night?
Q. My daughter is 10 weeks old and she usually sleeps through from around 12 until 7/8am. When will she sleep straight through from as early as her bedtime, say 7pm until 7am? Is her 8 hours sleeping she is doing at the moment a good start? I want to start putting her to bed at 7 so she gets into a routine, but I think she'll wake up in the middle of the night when I do that.

A. I would consider 8 straight hours a blessing. My 6 month old sleeps for 2 hours and wakes...or sometimes I luck out and get 4 hours. He went through a period where he would sleep for 8 to 10 hours when he was 3 months old...I thought I was so lucky lol. I think your daughter is doing wonderful...and maybe she will start sleeping longer...but I wouldn't interrupt her schedule now, you might regret it. :)

How do you get yourself back to normal sleeping habits?
Q. I have messed up sleeping patterns and I always go to sleep really late. Somedays I feel exhausted for going to bed late and I take naps. Other days I don't take naps even though I only had 2-3 hours of sleep at night. There is a lot going in my mind these days but it is getting better. So maybe I am having trouble resting my mind. But what should I do to get myself back to normal sleeping patterns?
Asked by Susan K - Sun Aug 16 03:35:19 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You might have insomnia. What you could do is set yourself on a schedule. Whatever time you KNOW is a NORMAL time to go to bed at, go to bed then. Even if you don't feel tired. Turn off all lights and computers and televisions. Laying in bed, even if you don't fall asleep right away, will be peaceful and in time you will fall asleep. If you wake up at night, just go back to sleep and set your alarm for what time you think right for you to wake up at. It's better to set a schedule for your sleeping times. Because you take naps during the day, it messes up your schedule even more. Just go to sleep at a certain time and wake up a certain time. If you sleep during the day, then hey you just get more sleep! Woo!
