Related termsFrom Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Technology is the usage and knowledge of tools, techniques, crafts, systems or methods of organization. The word technology comes from the Greek technología (τεχνολογία) — téchnē (τέχνη), an 'art', 'skill' or 'craft' and -logía (-λογία), the study of something, or the branch of knowledge of a discipline. The term can either be applied generally or to specific areas: examples include construction technology, medical technology, or state-of-the-art technology or high technology. Technologies can also be exemplified in a material product, for example an object can be termed state of the art. Technologies significantly affect human as well as other animal species' ability to control and adapt to their natural environments. The human species' use of technology began with the conversion of natural resources into simple tools. The prehistorical discovery of the ability to control fire increased the available sources of food and the invention of the wheel helped humans in travelling in and controlling their environment. Recent technological developments, including the printing press, the telephone, and the Internet, have lessened physical barriers to communication and allowed humans to interact freely on a global scale. However, not all technology has been used for peaceful purposes; the development of weapons of ever-increasing destructive power has progressed throughout history, from clubs to nuclear weapons. Technology has affected society and its surroundings in a number of ways. In many societies, technology has helped develop more advanced economies (including today's global economy) and has allowed the rise of a leisure class. Many technological processes produce unwanted by-products, known as pollution, and deplete natural resources, to the detriment of the Earth and its environment. Various implementations of technology influence the values of a society and new technology often raises new ethical questions. Examples include the rise of the notion of efficiency in terms of human productivity, a term originally applied only to machines, and the challenge of traditional norms. Philosophical debates have arisen over the present and future use of technology in society, with disagreements over whether technology improves the human condition or worsens it. Neo-Luddism, anarcho-primitivism, and similar movements criticise the pervasiveness of technology in the modern world, opining that it harms the environment and alienates people; proponents of ideologies such as transhumanism and techno-progressivism view continued technological progress as beneficial to society and the human condition. Indeed, until recently, it was believed that the development of technology was restricted only to human beings, but recent scientific studies indicate that other primates and certain dolphin communities have developed simple tools and learned to pass their knowledge to other generations. Q. Dreaming is life's great solitary adventure. Whatever pleasures or terrors the dream state provides, we experience them alone or not at all. Just imagine, if other people could literally invade our dreams, what if a technology existed that enabled interlopers to create and manipulate sleeping life with the goal of stealing our secret thoughts, or more unsettling still, implanting ideas in the deepest of subconscious states and making us believe they're our own? Sounds creepy to me. Asked by Bay Area good guy - Tue Aug 3 23:37:07 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments What technology would I need to alert a gadget of something specific in its vicinity? Q. I am trying to work out wjat type of technology I would need to send a signal (warning) that a specific item is in range of an item say 5 meters. Like a transmitter and receiver type devise. Any ideas? Asked by Toddy S - Fri Nov 7 04:18:07 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. 1) video capture. If the picture changes, alert the device. 2) infrared. send out a pulse of infrared light. wait for it's reflection. Measure the time delay and divide by 2 to get distance. 3) proximity (capacitive). As the dielectric changes due to foreign objects between / near two plates, the capacitance changes. 4) ultrasonic. just like infrared, but uses sound too high to hear. 5) RF. radiate a radio signal. Watch for its reflection from metal objects. Answered by David F - Fri Nov 7 15:21:32 2008 How has technology advanced so rapidly in the past 200 years with only human intelligence?
Q. We go from being a species of fairly primitive beings in the 1800s to a species that has extremely advanced technology in such a short amount of time. How did we do this without any outside help? Asked by Chris - Thu Aug 20 00:24:34 2009 - - 17 Answers - 0 Comments A. Well, not every society developed equally, for more on this read 'Guns, Germs and Steel' by Jared Diamond. The basic formula has to do with food, population, specialization and innovation made possible through recreation. A population of people need to be fixed in one spot, with plenty of food provided by the food-specialists so some people in the village can do something other than hunting/gathering/plantin g. This frees up others to do art or medicine and others have time to invent. In this society, everyone knows they won't starve, and specialization breeds experts in their given fields. A well-fed society will have more and healtheir babies, and the cycle continues. Domesticated animals help provide labor, transportation and food.
