Voting is a method for a group such as a meeting or an electorate to make a decision or express an opinion—often following discussions, debates, or election campaigns. It is often found in democracies and republics.

Reasons for voting

In a representative government, voting commonly implies election: a way for an electorate to select among candidates for office. In politics voting is the method by which the electorate of a democracy appoints representatives in its government.

A vote is an individual's act of voting, by which he or she expresses support or preference for a certain motion (for example, a proposed resolution), a certain candidate, a selection of candidates, or a political party. With a secret ballot to protect voters' political privacy, voting generally takes place at a polling station. The act of voting is voluntary in some countries; whereas some countries, such as Argentina, Australia, Belgium and Brazil, have compulsory voting systems.

Is it too late to become registered vote by mail?
Q. I have a vote by mail application that says: "Signing this form will make you a permanent vote by mail voter. A ballot will automatically be mailed to you for future elections. Failure to vote in two consecutive statewid egeneral elections will cancel your permanent vote by mail status; however, it will not cancel your voter registration." So I am planning to send this mail tomorrow (saturday) 10-25, will I be able to make it?

Why do we bother to vote when it really comes down to the number of electoral votes?
Q. I mean, didn't Bush get outnumbered in votes, but won because of the electoral votes? I support voting and I'm not saying we shouldn't vote, but why do we bother if this is how the winner is determined? Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong on any of this.

A. Because we are actually voting for the electors... I am opposed to the electoral college though and would prefer to elect a president based on the popular vote total. Actually Bush lost to Gore in the popular vote and if all the votes in Florida were recounted he would have lost the electoral vote too. It was a corrupt Supreme Court, mostly appointed by his dad's administration that overruled the Florida recount.

How do I register to vote if I am temporarily in a different state?
Q. I recently turned 18 and have been following the political campaign closely. I would like to register to vote. For personal reasons though, I am temporarily (and will be for the election) outside of my district. How would I go about registering to vote without being in my district? Thanks in advance for any help!
